Please introduce yourselves.
Aesim Kim: My name is Aesim Kim and I am from Korea. I think it has been about 7 years since I came to the United States.
Dongwoo Kang: Yes, I am Dongwoo Kang. Ah, I am Mrs. Aesim Kim’s husband.
Q1. Why did you come to the U.S.?
Kim: We came to the U.S. because we had been thinking about it for a long time while working in Korea especially about the children’s education–we have three children, you see. So, while thinking about the education of the children, we considered sending only the children abroad to study, but we felt a bit hesitant about sending them without their parents. Because we wanted to make a sacrifice for our children, we decided to immigrate to the U.S. We decided to immigrate, but the process of immigrating from Korea was very difficult. There were not that many ways to immigrate, you see. I think you have heard a lot about the chicken farm that we chose–through the chicken farm, we settled our status, obtained permanent residency, and then came here through the immigration office.
Kang: First, we came became of our children’s education, and secondly, we wanted to come to the United States. We wanted to go to the United States but also other English-speaking countries like Australia, but while we were considering sending our children to study abroad, we ended up heading towards the United States as we were looking for a place that suited us.
Q2. What was it like when you first came to Columbia?
Kim: Because we have not experienced life in the U.S., everyone [when it comes to the U.S.] thinks of things like amazing big buildings or cities, right? We came to Columbia — in Korea, we lived in a city where the countryside and the city are fused together, but when we came to Columbia, it was a similar environment. Downtown Columbia looks like a city, but when you go outside [of downtown], it is like the countryside. We liked that kind of atmosphere, but our kids did not like it at first because it was too rural. However, we did not have a choice; because the chicken farm factory that sponsored us was in Columbia, we had to come to Columbia. I was content — a place called Columbia. I like natural things. So, I was content.
Kang: When we first arrived, the natural environment in Korea was quite similar, and, well, the sky was really blue. What that means is, in Korea, due to fine dust pollution, you cannot see a blue sky, but when I arrived at the airport in the United States and came to Columbia, I was amazed to see a blue sky. And at night, I was amazed to see such big stars. You cannot see stars these days in Korea. I was really amazed by the different and clean natural environment.
Q3. How was it when you first arrived in Columbia?
Kim: At first? When we first immigrated and arrived in the United States, it was very difficult. What can I say…That kind of life that we have never experienced before, is like a pattern starting now. Therefore, in a way, we have given up all the comfort and prosperity of the life we had in Korea and came here, but now that we are here, it is a situation where we really need to pioneer our lives. At first, it was so difficult that I even thought about going back. For about a year, we had a lot of worries. I had thought a lot about just folding up here and going back to Korea. It was very difficult, but even the difficult process that the children went through has passed as time goes by. As we watched the children grow and adapt, despite our difficult moments - we came to this place for the sake of our children. Because we came here for the children to study in a wider world, as we watched the children grow so well–it was difficult, so difficult at first–we are so grateful that our children have grown up so well.
Kang: The fact that we arrived means that our immigrant life has already begun. Starting immigrant life was much more difficult than I thought, compared to what I had imagined in Korea. There were many obstacles and I had a lot of worries on how to overcome them. So, I had a lot of questions like whether I should go back to Korea or live here. As a couple, we fought a lot because of that. I remember those moments.
Q4. What do you like about the Columbia community?
Kim: The Columbia community… I am not sure because I have not been to many other states, but I think people in Columbia are very kind. They treat us so nicely and honestly–as we are Asians, there could be a lot of racial discrimination, as people commonly say. However, they are so warm and friendly. I just arrived in Columbia, so I am not sure if they are like this only to me, but they have been so kind and I really liked it.
Kang: First, it’s really quiet here, in my opinion. The neighborhood itself seems very quiet. People seem to be very friendly. And it was really nice to be close to home when buying things or going to the store.
Q5. Why did you open the restaurant?
Kim: When I was in Korea, I never thought about running a restaurant because I worked in the medical field. But after coming here to the United States, I realized that I do not have to limit myself to the same job that I had before–I can try something new. So, isn’t it charming to open a restaurant and serve Korean food to Americans? Moreover, since all Koreans are involved in Korean cuisine, we have confidence in it. That is why I think running a restaurant is a suitable business for us. It was not just a coincidence.
Kang: The reason we opened a restaurant is a bit complicated. We were looking for a job and had various occupations. While working in different jobs, we didn’t fit in well and faced several problems. Coincidentally, the pastor of our church recommended taking over this restaurant. So, my wife started working here (in the U.S.) for about six months, and eventually, we decided to open this restaurant.
Q6. What do you look forward to when opening the restaurant every day?
Kim: Every day, we heard that South Carolina is a place where Christianity is a strong religion. But since we are also Christians, we wake up every morning and go to work with that mindset. We hope that everyone who comes to our restaurant can eat without getting sick or having any problems. You know, you can get sick or have problems after eating food. So, we hope that every morning, we can eat deliciously, digest well, and have a healthy and happy day, so that we can work hard and do well. That’s what we think.
Kang: I am not sure. Well, there are various things, but for now, we are trying to introduce Korean food and communicate with many guests in English, even though we may not speak it fluently. It feels like there are many things that connect us emotionally. For example, we talk a lot about kindness and also about myself, and we talk a lot about Korea. It’s really nice to have a restaurant and be able to do that.
Q7. What kind of food do you serve?
Kim: We mostly serve Korean food here, but I’m not sure if traditional Korean food will suit the taste of Americans. Although the dishes have been slightly modified, we still base our food on Korean cuisine. We have dishes like stone pot bibimbap, and popular choices like galbi, bulgogi, and other dishes that all Koreans love, especially during the holidays. Spicy soups like maeuntang are also available. While we do stick to Korean food, we also provide dishes that cater to the preferences of Americans.
Kang: Korean food and our kindness, and I am controlling the customers as a waitress.
Q8. What kind of restaurant do you want to be for the Columbia community?
Kim: We hope that our Kimchi Restaurant becomes well-known in Columbia. If people come here, we want them to feel comfortable and enjoy their meal. We always play music, like CCM, to create a relaxing atmosphere. We want to provide a sense of comfort to our customers. Although we may not know everyone’s specific taste, we hope that our restaurant is known as a place where people feel at ease.
Kang: I want to promote Korea a little and also that Korean food is great, not just for anyone to eat, but also good for health–I want to promote that a lot.
Q9. If you could pick one charming point of the restaurant, what would it be?
Kim: When it comes to charming points, well, my husband is a waiter. But honestly, we don’t speak English well. However, we provide a friendly atmosphere, like friends with the customers. Anytime, well, if there is anything needed, we can also talk about personal matters. Just a family-like atmosphere? We want that. Even though we can’t speak English, customers do not feel any aversion or anything like that. We are in a position where customers help us more because they know we can’t do it, so we want to become a restaurant with a family-like atmosphere.
Kang: The main charming point of our restaurant is that, unlike other Korean restaurants, we do not sell alcohol. Because we do not sell alcohol, it is a quiet place where families can come and eat in a peaceful atmosphere.
Q10. If there is something you would like to say to past and future customers, please say it here.
Kim: [Customers] in the past — there may be people who have come before and there may be people who will come later, but when you come to our Kimchi Restaurant, you may like it or you may not. I hope that everyone who comes will not be disappointed. There are times when you order something, but it does not suit your taste. In that case, please let us know anytime so that we can become a restaurant that continuously improves.

자기소개를 부탁드립니다.
김애심: 저는 한국에서 온 김애심이라고 하고요. 미국에 온 지는 지금 7년정도 된 것 같아요.
강동우: 예, 저는 강동우라고 하고요. 어, 김애심씨 남편입니다.
Q1. 미국에 오신 이유가 무엇인가요?
김애심: 저희는 미국에 온 거는 저희가 예전부터 한국에서 직장생활을 하면서 계속 생각을 해왔던 건데, 아이들의 교육 문제가 있어서 저희는 아이들이 셋이잖아요. 그래서 아이들의 교육 문제를 생각하다가 저희가 아이들만 유학을 보낼까하다가 부모 없이 유학을 보내는 것은 제가 조금 그렇더라고요. 그래서 아이들을 위해서 그냥 우리 부부가 희생을 하자 싶어서 그래서 미국을 선택해서 이민을 오기로 결정을 했어요. 그래서 이민을 오기로 했는데 한국에서 그 당시에 이민을 오기까지는 과정이 굉장히 어려웠어요. 이민을 올 수 있는 방법이 그렇게 많지는 않았거든요. 그래서 저희가 선택한 게 치킨 팜이라고 많이 들어보셨을 것 같아요. 그래서 저희가 치킨 팜을 통해서 저희가 신분을 해결하고 영주권을 취득한 다음에 그런 과정을 이주공사를 통해서 진행을 해서 오게 됐어요.
강동우: 먼저 첫번째로는 아이들 교육 때문에 오게 되었고, 두번째로는 저희가 미국에 오고 싶었어요. 어떤 미국뿐만 아니라 다른 호주나 영어권 나라에 한 번 가고 싶었는데, 아이들을 유학 보낼 겸 했다가 저희와 맞는 곳을 찾다보니까 미국으로 향하게 됐습니다.
Q2. 처음으로 컬럼비아에 오신 것은 어땠습니까?
김애심: 저희는 미국에서의 생활을 안 해봤기 때문에 다들 미국 그러면 굉장한 빅 빌딩이라던가 시티 (city) 같은, 그런 것만 생각을 하잖아요? 저희는 컬럼비아 왔는데 저희가 한국에서 살았던 곳이 시골틱 하면서 도시가 같이 융합되어 있는 그런 도시에서 살았었거든요. 근데... 콜롬비아에 딱 왔는데 그런 비슷한 환경인 거예요. 여기도 콜롬비아 시내는 도시 같지만 나오면 또 시골 같잖아요. 그래서 저는 그런 분위기가 좋았는데 저희 아이들은 너무 시골이라고 처음에 싫어하긴 했어요. 처음에. 그렇지만 저희에게는 선택권은 없었어요. 왜냐면 저희를 스폰해줬던 공장이, 치킨팜이, 컬럼비아에 있었기 때문에 저희가 컬럼비에에 올 수밖에 없었는데. 저는 만족했어요. 콜롬비아라는 곳을. 저는 자연적인 걸 좋아하거든요. 그래서 저는 만족했어요.
강동우: 처음 도착했을때는 한국에 있는 자연환경과 거의 비슷했고, 그리고, 뭐, 하늘이 되게 파랬어요. 그게 무슨 뜻이냐면, 어, 한국은 되게 이제 미세먼지 때문에, 하늘, 파란 하늘을 볼 수가 없는데, 미국 공항에 도착하고 그리고 또 컬럼비아 와서 파란 하늘을 보고 너무 놀랐었고. 그리고 밤에 너무 큰 별을 보고 놀랐어요. 별을 요즘 볼 수 가 없거든요 한국은. 그래서 그 자연 환경이 되게 다른 것에 대해서 그리고 깨끗한 것에 대해서 되게 놀랐습니다.
Q3. 컬럼비아에 처음 도착한 이후로 어떻게 지내셨습니까?
김애심: 처음이요? 처음에 이민을 와서 미국 딱 왔을 때는 너무 힘들었어요. 뭐라 그럴까, 저희가 한 번도 겪어보지 않은 그런 삶이, 패턴이 이제 시작되는 거잖아요. 그래서 어떻게 보면 한국에 있었던 그 안락함과 우리가 풍요롭게 살았던 그런 삶을 모두 포기하고 여길 왔는데 여기 와서는 정말 저희가 개척을 해야 하는 상황이잖아요. 저희 삶을. 그래서 처음에는 너무 힘들어서 “다시 돌아갈까?” 라는 생각도 했었거든요. 한 1년 남짓 저희가 많이 고민을 했던 것 같아요. 여기서 그냥 접고 한국을 다시 가는 게 맞지 않을까 생각을 많이 했었는데. 많이 힘들었었는데, 아이들이 1년이 지나고 많이 힘든 과정이 그 또한 지나가잖아요, 시간이 흘러감에 있어서. 아이들이 자라는 모습을 보면서 아이들이 적응해 가는 모습을 보니까 그다음에는 저희의 힘들었던 순간들도 우리가 아이들을 위해서 여기를 왔잖아요. 아이들 어떻게 보면 더 넓은 세상에서 공부를 해보라는 뜻에서 왔기 때문에 아이들이 그렇게 자라는 모습을 볼 때 그냥 힘들었지만, 처음에는 너무 정말 힘들었지만, 저희 아이들이 너무 잘 커 줘서 감사하고 있습니다.
강동우: 도착했다는 거는 저희 이민 생활이 이미 시작했다는 뜻이거든요. 이민 생활을 시작하니까 생각한 것보다, 한국에서 생각한 것 보다는 굉장히 힘들었고. 부딛히는 것도 많았고, 이걸 어떻게 헤쳐나갈까라는 고민이 되게 많았습니다. 그래서 한국을 다시 돌아가야 되나 아니면 여기서 살아야 되나 그런 question(질문)을 굉장히 많이 했던 것 같아요. 서로 부부가. 그것 때문에 아내와 좀 많이 싸우기도 하고. 뭐 그랬던 부분이 생각납니다. 예.
Q4. 컬럼비아 커뮤니티에 대해 어떤 점을 좋아하시나요?
김애심: 콜롬비아의 커뮤니티… 저희가 다른 여러 주들을 안 가봐서 잘 모르겠지만 저는 콜롬비아의 사람들이 너무 친절하다고 생각을 해요. 너무 nice 하게 대해주고 솔직히 저희가 동양인이다 보니까 어떻게 보면 흔히들 말하는 인종차별 같은 게 많잖아요. 근데 그런 것도 없이 너무 따뜻하게 대해주시고 그래서. 콜롬비아에 딱 왔는데 모든 사람들이 친절해서 저에게만 그런 건지는 모르겠지만 너무 친절해서 너무 좋았습니다.
강동우: 일단 여기는 되게 조용, 제가 생각하기엔, 되게 조용한 것 같고, 동네 자체가. 사람들이 많이 친절한 것 같아요. 그리고 물건을 사거나 store(가게) 갈 때도 집에서 가까워서 되게 좋았습니다, 그런건.
Q5. 왜 식당을 열었습니까?
김애심: 저도 한국에 있을 때는 식당이란걸 안 해보고 의료 쪽에 종사를 했기 때문에 식당을 할 거라고는 저희도 생각을 못 했었거든요. 여기 미국에 와서 보니까 꼭 제가 했던 그런 직업만을 찾는 게 아니라 새로운 거를 시도를 해봐도 되겠다는 생각이 들더라고요. 그래서 식당이라는 게 어떻게 보면은 한국음식을 만들어서 미국분들한테 판다는 게 매력 있지 않아요? 그래서 저희가 또 자신 있는 게 한국분들은 모든분들이 한국음식을 하니깐요. 그래서 식당이 저에게는 저희 식구들에게 어울리는 사업이라고 생각을 해서 저희가 식당을 하게 됐던 것 같아요. 우연치 않게.
강동우: 식당을 열었던 동기라는 건 좀 말이 그런데, 저희가 직업을 찾다가, 여러 직업을 했었거든요. 이런 직장생활을 하다가 좀 많이 안 맞고, 여러가지로 문제가 있었는데 우연치 않게 교회 집사님이 이 식당을 인수 해 보는게 어떻냐고 추천을 해 주셔서 아내가 먼저 여기서 6개월 정도 일을 하고 그리고 생각한 끝에 이 식당을 열게 되었습니다.
Q6. 매일 식당을 오픈할 때 무엇을 기대하시나요?
김애심: 매일매일 저희는 여기 사우스캐롤라이나가 제가 알기로는 기독교라는 종교가 짙다고 들었었거든요. 근데 저희 또한 종교가 기독교다 보니까 매일 아침에 눈 떠서 출근할 때마다 그런 마음을 갖고 오죠. 저희 식당에 오시는 모든 분들은 드시고 나서 정말 하나님의 축복으로 아프지 않고, 탈 나지 않고. 그렇잖아요. 음식 먹고 탈 날 수 있고 그렇잖아요. 그래서 아침에 매일 그런 마음으로 그냥 맛있게 먹고 소화 잘하고 건강하게 행복한 하루가 돼서 일을 열심히 잘하셨으면 좋겠다. 그런 생각을 합니다.
강동우: 글쎄요. 여러가지가 있지만 일단은 저희가 한국 음식을 알린다는 것과 여러 손님들하고 영어로 말은 많이 못하지만 마음적으로 되게 여러가지가 통하는 것 같아요. 예를들면 친절함이나 나에 대해서도 많이 알려그러고 한국에 대해서도 얘기를 되게 많이 하고 또 제가 알려주기도 하고 그래서 그런점이 참 좋습니다 식당을 하면서.
Q7. (식당에서) 어떤 종류의 음식을 제공하시나요?
김애심: 저희는 뭐 대부분 한국 음식이라고는 하지만 그래도 전통적인 한국 음식이 여기 미국분들의 입맛에 맞을지는 모르겠지만 조금은 변형이 된 음식이기는 하지만. 그래도 기본은 한국 음식을 기본으로 해서 음식을 하고 있는데. 돌솥비빔밥이며 좋아하시는 갈비, 불고기, 명절 때마다 모든 한국분들이 좋아하시는 것이니까요. 매운탕 같은 것도 괜찮으실 것 같고. 저희가 한국의 음식을 많이 고수하는 편이긴 한데 그래도 미국분들의 취향에 맞춰서 음식을 제공하고 있습니다.
강동우: 한국 음식과 그리고 어, 저희의 친절과, 그리고 저는 WAITRESS로 손님들을 다 컨트롤(control) 하고 있습니다.
Q8. 컬럼비아 커뮤니티를 위해 어떤 종류의 식당이 되고 싶으세요?
김애심: 저희는 저희 김치 식당이 컬럼비아에 그렇게 소문이 났으면 좋겠어요. 여기를 가면, 왠지 모르게 가면 마음이 편하고 밥 먹을 때 enjoy하고 갈 수 있는 그런 식당이더라 그런 인식이 있었으면 좋겠어요. 그래서 저희는 항상 음악 같은 것도 CCM 같은 음악을 틀어드리는 이유도 그런 게 있거든요. 그래서 식사하시는 분들에게 항상 편안함을 제공하는. 언제든 지 올 수 있고 부담스럽지 않고 맛은 잘 모르겠지만, 각각의 사람의 특수한 taste(입맛)이기 때문에 그거는 잘 모르겠지만. 그래도 김치 식당 하면 아, 거기는 가면 왠지 모르게 마음이 편한 식당이야 그런 느낌을 받았으면 좋겠습니다.
강동우: 한국을 좀 알리고 싶고 그리고 한국 음식이 위대하고 그런게 아니라 누구나 다 먹을 수 있고 그리고 건강에도 좋다는 거를 많이 알리고 싶습니다.
Q9. 식당에서 하나의 매력포인트를 선택할 수 있다면, 어떤 것을 선택하시겠습니까?
김애심: 매력 포인트라 하면, 어, 저희 신랑이 웨이터를 하고 있잖아요. 근데 저희 신랑이, 솔직히 저희 부부가 영어를 잘 못해요. 그렇지만 오시는 손님과 친구 같은 편안함. 언제든지, 뭐, 필요한 게 있으면 사적인 필요함도 얘기할 수 있고. 그냥 가족적인 분위기? 저희는 그런 거를 원하고 있습니다. 너무 상업적인 그런 식당이 아닌, 그냥 편하게 얘기할 수 있는. 영어 못하지만 그래도 저희가 영어를 못한다고 해서 손님들이 거부감을 느끼거나 그러진 않으세요. 저희가 못하는 걸 알고 손님들이 더 도와주는 그런 입장이라서 저희는 가족 같은 분위기, 그런 식당이 되고 싶습니다.
강동우: 저희 식당의 매력 포인트는 일단은 다른 한국 음식점과 달리 술은 팔지 않아요. 술은 팔지 않기 때문에 조용하고 그리고 가족들이 와서 먹을 수 있는, 조용한 분위기에서 먹을 수 있는 – 그런 식당이고.
Q10. 과거와 미래의 손님들에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있으시면, 여기에 말씀해주세요.
김애심: 과거의, 음… 예전에 오신 분들도 계실 거고 나중에 또 오실 분들도 계시겠지만 저희 김치 식당에 오셔서 마음에 드실 수도 있고 안 드실 수도 있는데 음. 모든분들에게 저는 마음이 안 상해서 갔으면 좋겠는데. 그렇잖아요. 뭘 시켰는데 내 taste(입맛)에 안 맞는 경우도 있잖아요. 그러면은 언제든지 말씀해 주시면 저희가 개선을 할 수 있는 그런, 네, 그런 개선해 나가는 식당이 되도록 하겠습니다.
강동우: 가족들과 부담없이 조용하게 먹을 수 있는 곳이니까 언제든지 찾아오세요. 감사합니다!
