Synth-pop musician and Columbia native Toro y Moi, also known as Chaz Bear, finished his East coast tour with a show in his hometown on Saturday night at The Senate Columbia.
Bathed in pastel blue and pink light, Bear's minimalist aesthetic and effortless combination of dreampop and hip-hop created a chill house party vibe distinctly different from Dizzy Fae's high energy opening performance. Donning a two-piece teal jumpsuit circa 1995, Fae's set featured quirky r&b tracks comparable to the would-be lovechild of Janelle MonĂ¡e and Missy Elliott.
Bear's set felt like more like one long song, rather than a collection of independent tracks. Each song bled into the next, punctuated by brief periods of complete darkness. Throughout the night, Bear covered a wide range of his discography, including songs like "Mirage" and "Girl's Like You" from his most recent album "Boo Boo," in addition to unreleased songs from his upcoming studio album, "Outer Peace," set to release Jan. 18.
