It all began in 2008 with the release of Lady Gaga’s phenomenon album, “Fame”. Shock and criticism littered the media as Gaga stormed in with her bubbles and bacon, but we all know in the back of our minds that we find whatever antics this Monster attempts just fascinating. From there, the madness set in as stars like Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J followed suit. Now, those of us in the real world constantly behold slews of eccentric ensembles full of perfect Halloween costume ideas.
But, it’s not all negative news that follows these fearless style icons around. Fashion trendsetters are always on the lookout for new inspirations. After all, we can only take so many little black dresses and patent-leather platforms before our bodies ache for some kind of flare. Thanks to the boldness of multiple Gaga-esque musical talents, we have the permission we need (i.e. celebs do it, thus, so can we!) to expand our sartorial choices past our daily routines and into our fantasy dress-up box.
And guys, don’t think you’re left out of this one. Did you see Mick Jagger at the Grammy’s? The man is still rocking it.
Personally, I have a hard time gathering the nerve to strut around Five Points in a lace jumpsuit. But, 2011 is officially the year for taking risks. It may be difficult to reach the level of confidence that these ladies seem to have dominated, but we can certainly take baby steps and work our way up. Be not afraid: wear those accessories that were considered gaudy last year or throw on some heels and lipstick before class. And don’t shy away from the chance to rock the unusual. It’s 2011. We’re allowed.
