So I have a newly instituted weekly tradition called Pizza Thursday. My Columbia Pizza worldview has been limited to Pop’s Pizza in Five Points since freshman year but after some googling, it turns out that there is no paucity of good pizza places in Columbia. Although my institution is still fairly new (I’ve been doing it for four weeks), I already found a gem in Columbia.
I’ve driven past Pizza Man Pizzeria on Woodrow Street several times on my way to Rockaway’s for some pimento cheese fries, but I only gave it a passing glance. But let me tell you, Pizza Man Pizzeria is real good. The colossal pizza is not as big as it sounds, but it is pretty filling. You get a free topping on each pizza so I made mine count and got some meatballs. The place itself is dark and the service was a little slow (although the one waitress who appeared to be the only one there was very nice). But trust me when I tell you that patience pays off. The pizza itself has a thin crust, but the meltability (yes, I said meltability) of the mozzarella is what really stood out to me. What I mean by meltability is that when you take a bite and move the slice away from your mouth, there is a nice string of cheese left hanging in the air. I haven’t seen this kind of meltability in South Carolina, and I was very appreciative of this.
Overall, it’s a good place. They have a bar and from what I saw they run cheap drink specials on the weekends, and I’m sure the place gets packed. So if you want a break from the bustle of Five Points and Pop’s but still want to get plastered and eat pizza, give Pizza Man a try. They even have a Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Columbia-SC/Pizza-Man/123755516055
And that’s it until after spring break. Have a good one!
